As creative director of Laughing Cardinal Productions, I believe in the importance of creating unique, high quality video content. I was extremely delighted when BancVue's Kasasa team decided to partner with us to create a video about their unique vision of modern banking. There was an instant match of creativity and trust that powered us in creating the “Make a Difference with Kasasa” video.
What we kept in mind during the process
Kasasa is on the cutting edge of banking with a mission to empower individual consumers. It was important that the video communicate this through a style that defines Kasasa as a powerful tool that empowers account holders and makes each individual an unstoppable force. Even more importantly, it does so through unconventional means to inspire the consumer in a way megabanks cannot due to their impersonal natures.
Setting the scene in the video
The video is set within a world where industry overshadows individual. The consumers of the video have empowered giant institutions and thus imprisoned themselves and their finances. Only with a unified effort through Kasasa are they able to overwhelm and break free from the megabank's shadow and regain personal control.
My favorite part
I particularly enjoyed constructing the opening sequence because it doesn't feel like the beginning of a banking video. As the skyscraper is introduced, excitement builds and a narrative reveals itself to take the audience on a journey. It starts out bleak and ominous but quickly transitions into a world of hope, as personal freedom is won and a stronger community is formed.
A few hiccups along the way
While constructing storyboards, there was one element that could have gone awry. Originally, the story was spun around the consumer as a figure who would become endowed with super powers to win their financial freedom via a Kasasa cape. The climax centered on the megabank skyscraper crumbling and the newly freed figures falling toward their deaths as it falls. The figures are suddenly saved at the last minute when the chanting of the community banks gives them power through the Kasasa cape, which unfurls, allowing them to take flight seconds before impact.
This didn't work for a single obvious reason: a skyscraper crumbling and figures falling invokes images of a terrorist attack. Not good!
Adjusting the narrative to focus more on theme than character was surprisingly simple and we came up with ideas that were better than the original. The creativity of our diverse group was able to show that Kasasa is different and not afraid to let it be known.
Not afraid to empower the little guy, artist, consumer, with the ability to share different ideas, resources and rather than think outside of the box, drop it all together and create a community of their own. It was an extremely fulfilling experience.
